Bradley’s Snow Trip – Thursday 19th

These are my entries from Facebook for those that aren’t my “friends”:

11:30  Again the alarms didn’t wake me up so Mr. Connell had to at 6:55 again. Had breakfast of sausages, french toast and a banana. Only a few of us got our gear on due to conditions this morning. Wind speeds of 100km/h had stopped all the lifts but two. We waited and waited for Falls express to open, then retreated back to the lodge and buried Shannon in snow.

Talked to the teachers about going to the summit but they rejected it due to safety concerns. Went inside to see half the lodge going to the village and half staying behind to clean the sticky plastic strips the teachers used to identify us on the mountain off our helmets. It was sticky as hell and took a long time to… get it off. As i was doing that i had some more noodles… ?

…Halfway through cleaning my helmet the rest of us got dressed into warm clothes and left the lodge too. We waited at the shuttle bus stop and it took 3 turns for us all to get there. Once there i met up with Shannon, Josh, Moses, Harry, Pat and we all went down the gullty chairlift to a shop. A little MILO kid who w…as going up on the other side asked us why we were going down, all i could say was ‘i dont know’…

?…After finding some Pete the snowdragon slippers for 15 bucks which were too small we went back up and paid out the skiers falling down on the run beneath us, and there were a lot of them. After surviving a snowball ambush at the top of the lift our group met up with Kettle, Richo, Beth, Jevan and Jordan and had a ma…ssive tackling and snowb all fight on top of a small snowy ridge…

?…It was fun tumbling and sliding down the ledge, but after a while it was time to go back to the lodge for lunch, where i found that someone had finished cleaning my helmet.

19:30  Lunch today was baguettes and after that we all had to make our way to the only available run, final muster and the only available lift, the gully. Both are terrible for skiing usually but today everyone was using them and they were crowded with beginners fallen over and the lift queue was crowded with those lucky enou…gh to survive it. Today for our lesson we had Neil instead of the usual Josef…

Lesson was good and skiing the run was ok, but i think we skied it around 10 times before returning to the lodge for the night. When I got there i had to hunt down ms constantopolous for my lift pass which she’d picked u from a shop which i’d dropped it at. Then i watched Tomb Raider with some other people until tea. For tea we had chicken parmageanas, potato bake, mashed pumpkin (I think) and beans…

?…I didn’t eat the beans and parme (because of intolerance). Instead i spent around 20 minutes measuring out tiny milk packs and hot water to mix with the pasta pack which took a long time to actually heat up and absorb it. I then sat in the movie room again and continued watching tomb raider with the others until the… meeting. The meeting discussed how we would be moving out tomorrow, and wasn’t too relevant to me

22:00   After the meeting we did some more planning of the prank and decided to can the idea of the ‘dead’ bodies out the window, and go with the plan of showing them around the room being heaps suss, then when we opened the door as if to pull the prank, someone would blast them with an airhorn. We then sat down to watch ‘Clash of the Titans’ and never pull the prank and lose inspection to the girls by 1 point

Bradley’s Snow Trip – Wednesday 18th

These are my entries from Facebook for those that aren’t my “friends”:

13:30  Woke up at 6:20 for no reason and stayed half asleep until 6:50. Breakfast for me was a piece of jam toast, a bowl of coco pops and an apple. Hit the slopes to find winds of around 50km/h. Powder was being whipped up into the air and stinging our faces as gale force winds rocked the chairlifts and made trying to move on flat land near impossible. Got back for lunch and brought all my gear back to lodge because of rumors the lifts would close. Had to have lunch early because Mt. Barker high was also using Halleys lodge for lunch. We all had burgers then piled out as the mt barker kids came in for their turn. After lunch there was an announcement from Sam that th…e only lifts open would be Towers and Falls Express. It is extremely windy and snow is falling thick and fast

20:30  Decided not to go out for the second half of today due to winds and snow, but those who did said the snow was great as it was soft and easy to ski on. Spent most of the day playing cards and mucking around at the lodge before going to the shops for pasta packs and 2min noodles. Had one of the packs of noodles, finding …a spoon to eat it with halfway through it. Everyone got back we had our dinner of fish and wedges.

Lots more planning for todays prank. Spent quite a lot of time rehearsing it. When Jordan heard the teachers coming he would knock on the door to let us know and turn on the shower, then Harry showed them into the room and we turned off the shower. harry then showed the teachers Shannon and Jevan’s room, then they got …to the bathroom and Harry said ‘is that a pass?’ signaling Shannon to open the bathroom door… ?…wearing nothing but a towel with undies underneath, with wet hair and chest and saying ‘We’re just rying to conserve water’ and walking out into his room, followed by Me, Jevan, Josh, Richo and Kettle, all wet and in towels into his room. We then closed the door to the teachers in hysterics, and another prank was fulfilled. Tomorrow will require even more planning to pull off, but will be a grand finale

21:30  Had a quiz night, ou table came equal second. We were called ‘the Jewmobile’ and our rivals were ‘Rulul’. I won a bag of chocolates for my table purely for letting the teachers use my laptop and another for our table coming second.

Bradley’s Snow Trip – Tuesday 17th

These are my entries from Facebook for those that aren’t my “friends”:

07:18  Neither of our alarms went off this morning for some reason, but we blame Matt. Had 5 minutes after Mr. Connell woke us up to get to breakfast. I had jam on toast and bacon but others had spaghetti from a can and eggs (which were runny). 15 minutes until the days skiing starts and i plan to take a group of around 5 skier…s and boarders to the summit and take them on the wishing well

16:24  Had my first lesson for the week with Josef who was always trying to push us over. We went on the summit and most of us survived except Bec and Molly who had to slide down on their bums. Skied around with about 10 people around Highway 83, Main street and fox trail until lunch. Took last hoot back to the lodge and had pizza-toast for lunch. After lunch me and 8 others went to ruined castle with Ms Bradley and Ms constantopolous. The snow was great and the sun was warm, but as the clouds rolled in the snow got icy and the weather dropped. Spent most of the time on the ruined castle and south peak before meeting up at a cafe and taking Scott’s lift to the top…Skied down day’s end and followed the roads to the lodge, but the snow had melted a lot and so it was not enjoyable for any of us. It was only when we found out the time that we decided we could go for another run down wombats with Beth and Zoe joining in. Then i had a shower and then a group photo in front of the lodge

20:42  Dinner was roast lamb and veges. After that we had sticky date pudding with ice cream. For once i was waiting for room inspection. Ms. Bradley and Ms. Beadnall walked into our room to find Josh and Kettle hanging on coathangers in the closet and then turned to see me under Richo’s bed asleep and Matt on Josh’s bed…?…The teachers then inspected the bathroom to find Shannon with his pants down on the toilet. They were delighted. A+++ again and we’re going to top ourselves again tomorrow. stay tuned.

Bradley’s Snow Trip – Monday 16th

These are my entries from Facebook for those that aren’t my “friends”:

11:26  Back for lunch. some people are unhappy with their abilities at skiing or snowboarding but most are having a great time. after skiing the fresh powder with the teachers and other second or third (or ninth) time skiers while the rest of the students had their first skiing or boarding lesson we all met up at cloud 9. We made groups and chose teachers as our guardians and went out skiing. Because i am a good skier along with others we had no teacher and went whereever. after losing my group i joined another and spent a while helping Zoe Harry Kewell Smet and Beth Smith off the ground and down Drovers Dream until Shannon Chiappini… came to join us and we headed back to the lodge for lunch down wombats ramble.

12:01 lunch was shepards pie and cornflake cookies. Meeting in 5 to discuss new groups based on skill rather than friendship

16:49 great day of skiing. Weather cleared up after lunch and the snow was smoother to ski on. Saw many people go really well for their first time skiing. Lifts closed 15 minutes ago. Harry and I took an extended way to get home which requred no walking up hills carrying skis. The route was Rudi’s to Village Runto Broadway to Ory’s to Parallel St. to Alberg st. to Slalam st. to Christie st to Halley’s lodge. in the end it took double what the normal route would’ve and harry crashed 4 times.

22:18  spent a good hour preparing the weeks antics at room inspection time. Tonight we all sat around Jevan who was readng a bible, not moving or talking as Ms Bradley inspected our room. She gave us the best mark of the entire ski trip, an A+++. Diner was boiled veges mash and beef. We then threw cards at each other (we cle…aned them up after) and played blackack in our room until lights out

Onwards towards 3000 Geocache finds ….

After attending the celebration of SA Parrotheads 5000 Geocache finds on Sunday it was time to get to a milestone of my own. After signing up to Geocaching.com back in January 2002 but not getting serious until 5 years later in April 2007, we are now approaching 3000 finds.

Had a day off Monday and headed down south around Kangarilla and McLaren Flat but ran out of time as I needed to pick up the kids from school. With 14 finds for the morning, I was getting close but only managed to get to 2997.

So what to do. Somehow I have a free weekend (not sure how that has happened) and Bradley is in the Snow for a couple of weeks. The girls have girls things to do so it is “Geocaching Time”.

I haven’t been to the Yorke Peninsula for over 12 months and there are now 400 caches to be found. So the plan is to try and do 300 caches in 3 days, which will make the 3000, 3100, 3200 and maybe the 3300 milestone. 🙂

Bradley’s Snow Trip – Sunday 15th

These are my entries from Facebook for those that aren’t my “friends”:

17:20  had an epic snow ball fight. Everyones warmed up and gear is wet. Dinner in 5

18:39  delicious Spag bog for tea, then cheesecake for desert. Meeting at 8 or 730 for Adelaide. most people are too tired to even do that but its compulsory

20:29 had a meeting preparing us for tomorrows day of skiing. Richo has crashed and many others too.

12 of 12 August 2010 – Breathing Apparatus ……

The day didn’t start well with a couple of Geocaching Events I was planning being knocked back for approval. After doing a little research and a letter to the Ump, I hope that he will reconsider the Events and have them listed.

Today was my annual Breathing Apparatus Re-accreditation. It involves some theory, then some drills in the Training Tower where the house prop and cage prop are darkened, filled with smoke and “heavy” dummies, we suit up in our Fire-fighting PPE, Breathing Apparatus, take in hoselines and drag out all the dummies.

Even though today was cool and drizzly, it was still warm enough to work up a sweat.

The day finished on a high though with a FTF on a cache at Upper Sturt on the way home, GC2D8VT – Beagles Boyfriend 🙂

12 of 12 July 2010 …

Having returned last night from the Birdsville Track, I thought today would be an average day just cleaning up. How things change.

The day started with a phone call from my brother. He was having IT issues at his office after the storm that came through Blackwood on Saturday morning. His modem had fried and the network wasn’t working like it should. A new modem and a few tweaks to the network and he was up and running.

Next was a trip to Adelaide for the regular Geocaching Pub Lunch at the Marble Bar. A lot of the regulars including some others that had returned from the Birdsville Track wetting the appetite of more 4WDers wanting to make the trek. There were also a few new faces today.

Around to the car wash to wash off the Birdsville Track mud and coffee, then back up to Blackwood to collect today’s pathtags from the post-box. Across the road from the post office was Hello Chinese Massage – why not!

Home with a clean 4WD, hang up the wet tents (we had some rain on the Birdsville Track which made the going fun) and then Molly the Dog went barking mad. It seems she found a couple of “friends” up in the spa rafters. See the last photo.

With the mud now off, it was time to check out the damage – final count – one new tyre, cracked windscreen and broken muffler. 🙁

Rain on the Birdsville Track ….

We were woken by the soothing sound of rain on the tents …… shit, everyone out of bed and let’s get packed up fast. Why, was the reply!! The answer was if there is too much rain then the Birdsville Track would be closed and we would be stuck there until it re-opened. (not all that bad :))

The tents and everything was packed up in record time and we were sitting at the petrol pumps of Mungerannie Hotel at 8:00 am when they opened up. Fuel was $1.65 a litre – how can it be 12c a litre cheaper than Marree??

It was onto the Birdsville Track and heading south to the Ferry. The rain was still falling albeit not too hard and the road was getting muddy and slippery.

We arrived at the Ferry to find one car lined up and the Ferry on the other side with no operators. I got on the CB to the Ferry Operators to find up about the hold-up. They claimed it was too rough but the creek was dead calm. OK, time for some breakfast while we waited. Half an hour later the Ferry arrived and they recognised us from yesterday and told us that they had been sorting out the belongings of the worker that died yesterday.

A quick trip over the Ferry and we went to the spot where the Birdsville Track was cut by the Cooper Creek. There was water everywhere with the camp-site sign and toilets 100 metres out in the water. Located here was the original “boat” (MV Tom Brennan) used when the Track was cut by flood waters.

We continued down the Track, and I started to feel a difference in the steering – yes a flat tyre. This was near Clayton Station.  A rock had fractured the tyre. No worries, grabbed the jack, spare tyre, wheel brace but where is the jack handle? Looked everywhere but couldn’t find it. (Of course I found it when I unpacked the car after we got home) Started using a screwdriver when another car stopped who also had an Isuzu so the right jack handle. It ended up that they lived near Mannum and knew Jenny’s Mum and Dad – how small is South Australia!

Back on the way and the road started to get muddy again. There had obviously been more rain here. A quick stop in Marree but not tyre repairs here so moved onto Lyndhurst where I had to get a new tyre as the fracture was to big to repair. A quick drive out on the very muddy Strzlecki Track to grab a cache at Clarrie’s Water Hole and we were back on the way south to Leigh Creek and Hawker.

With wet tents and sleeping backs, it was decided that we would not be camping tonight but the only thing available was a very budget caravan in the Flinders Ranges Caravan Park. It was some dry beds and the caravan park amenities were excellent.

After tea, Jenny and the kids played cards and I headed out to do some night caching (Found 14 caches around the Hawker area). All slept well, sleeping into 9:00 am the next morning. 🙂

Let’s go floating on the Cooper Creek …

Today was an easy drive with 200 km of the Birdsville Track to Mungerannie Hotel broken up 3/4 way by the Cooper Creek, but that’s OK there is a ferry over the water.

We had a look around Marree before heading off but there isn’t a lot to see apart from the old Train locomotives and the Lake Eyre Yacht Club. Fuelled up at $1.77 a litre and we were off on the Birdsville Track.

It was a pretty easy drive to the wet weather diversion of the Birdsville Track with a couple of rough spots. The diversion road was freshly graded but had not been completed. We arrived at the ferry with about 15 cars in the queue (well so we thought), which meant we were going to be in a long wait.

It ended up that most of the cars were there just to take photos and we were 4th in the queue. However, the ferry was on our side of the creek but there were no operators. It turns out that one of the grading road gang had suffered a heart attack and the ferry operator was the 1st Aid Officer.

After an hour they came to the queue and told us that the outcome was not that good and they were waiting for a helicopter with the Police and a Doctor. After another hour the chopper arrived, the 35 year old was pronounced dead and the ferry started up again.

It took around 15 minutes for the ferry to load a car, go to the other side, unload and load again and return. After another 40 minutes and we were on the Ferry and heading to the northern side of the Cooper Creek. The Ferry only took one car at a time, a total of 6 passengers and everyone had to wear a life jacket.

It wasn’t long and we were off the ferry and heading north to Mungerannie Hotel. The northern diversion road was very sandy but smooth, which was in contrast to the Normal Track which was rough in spots. We arrived to the oasis like Mungerannie Hotel and met up with Mungerannie Phil, set up the tents in the Wetlands Area. I went for a walk in the Wetlands to grab a couple of caches, while Jenny and the kids went for a swim in the Hot Pool.

After a spectacular sunset, we headed to the pub for tea, some beverages, 8 ball and then back to bed with some winds starting up.

Caches for the Day:

GC1EF5V – Hergott Springs

GC7339 – Hot Pools 1

GC1X91K – Desert Hats
